Petrichord is a dynamic contra dance trio based in the Washington, DC area, weaving together a number of influences to create an eminently danceable, engaging experience. Colleen Holroyd (fiddle, feet) brings her passion for Québécois, Cape Breton, and Scottish fiddle tunes to the band. Sophie Chang (cello) injects catchy and colorful accompaniments, drawing from her experience across a wide range of styles. Rounding out the trio is Bobby LaRose (piano, mandolin), adding his love of old time and Irish music.
The three met in the fall of 2018 through a mutual friend (Rebecca Weiss) and Glen Echo Open Band connections, and played all four together as the band Tea & Honey. When Rebecca moved out of the area, the three reformed as Petrichord, and have been a staple in the DC contra scene.
The trio is incredibly excited to be making an album this year, an adventure long in the making. The album will feature some of the band’s favorite dance sets, from standards in the tradition to new tunes written by Bobby and Colleen. The three hope to capture the spontaneous, joyful energy that they feel when playing together, either in practice or at a dance, producing an album the listener will love and come back to many times.
